    Alnus hirsuta 'Harbin' Prairie Horizon® Manchurian Alder
       
Description:
    The most drought tolerant alder evaluated in NDSU trials. Rapid-growing, medium-sized tree with dark green leaves. Bark is gray and beech-like. Purple catkins and clusters of brown, cone-like strobiles add interest to the tree during winter. Available in nursery trade. Tree mulching recommended.  Prairie Horizon® will reach a semi-mature height of 30 feet in 18 to 20 years.  Hardy in USDA Zone 3.
       
Potential Uses or Applications:
    Nursery stock, shelter, park, and specimen tree.
       
Development Stage:
    Plant material can be obtained from NDSU Plant Sciences Department or designated nursery subject to availability.
       
Patent Status:
    U.S. Trademark registered – Prairie Horizon®.
       
Licensing Status:
    This cultivar is available for non-exclusive licensing.
