Royal Splendor® Norway Spruce -- Picea abies ‘Noel' (RFM-44)
Striking evergreen landscape specimen characterized by a narrower, upsweeping branch angle with brighter emerald-green needle color.
USDA hardiness zone 3-7
Medium to fast (especially in youth).
Bright green, semi glossy needles year round, devoid of drooping, pendulous tertiary branchlets, which typify this species.
Monoecious, male flowers are infrequent, female flowers are terminal in crown and ruby-red.
3 - 5" cylindrical cone, light brown at maturity.
Upright narrowly-pyramidal branching.
Full sun to very light shade.
Performs best in well-drained soil and is tolerant of higher pH soils.
Side grafting or semi-hardwood cuttings.
Royal Splendor® is an outstanding ornamental selection of Norway Spruce with brighter green foliage and perfect narrowly-pyramidal growth habit.
Recommended as a landscape specimen tree in more open areas or as a nice upright screening tree. Royal Splendor® Norway Spruce maintains a narrowly-pyramidal form which is not typical of the species which typically develops drooping pendulous tertiary branchlets when mature. This is not the typical Norway Spruce to hide in a windbreak.
