ND279W
Inbred ND279W was derived fiom the synthetic breeding population, NDSF(FS)C3 via self pollination over eight generations with concurrent selection for plant stature, plant health, ear characteristics, and leaf growth rates. NDSF(FS)C3 is mostly yellow dent endosperm type, but it segregates for white endosperm at a low frequency. ND279W was selected for white endosperm and white cob color. NDSF(FS)C3 was developed from NDSF using reciprocal full-sib selection with NDSB as the tester population. NDSF was released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1983 as a genetic source for developing early-maturing inbreds [Cross (1 983) (Crop Sci. 23: 1227)l. The original SO plant was selected fiom NDSF(FS)C3 on the basis of its combining ability in replicated field tests in a full-sib family with a plant fi-om NDSB(FS)C3.
